The team formed by KREAN and ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS has been selected, in first place and with the highest score, for the second phase of the ideas competition for the new Illunbe multi-purpose pavilion in Donostia-San Sebastián, a phase in which the design proposal that will decide the final winner of the competition will be developed.
The ambitious ‘Illunbe Berria’ project consists of transforming the old bullring into a modern multi-purpose facility consisting of two distinct spaces: a main space where events of various kinds can be held, such as concerts, public shows, conferences, exhibitions and other cultural, social or sporting events, and a second space dedicated to sport, which could serve as the headquarters for the city's top basketball and handball teams (Gipuzkoa Basket, Ibaeta Basket and Bera-Bera handball). The aim is for the ‘Illunbe Berria’ works to be completed by 2030, coinciding with the World Cup being held in the city.
The KREAN + ZAHA HADID team has been selected along with four other teams due to its extensive previous experience in the construction of this type of facility, notably the expansion of the Anoeta Stadium, the London Olympic Aquatics Centre, the renovation and expansion of the Buesa Arena and the Al Janoub Stadium for the World Cup in Qatar.
